Gervonta Davis defends his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach in Houston. The undefeated Baltimore native is coming off an impressive eighth-round knockout victory over Frank Martin in June, marking his first fight since serving a 44-day jail sentence last summer.
Davis, 29, was initially in talks for a high-profile bout with Vasiliy Lomachenko, but negotiations fell through, leaving Davis to face Roach instead. While Roach is a respected fighter, currently holding the WBA super featherweight title at 130 pounds, he’ll be a heavy underdog as he moves up in weight to challenge Davis.

Roach’s last fight in June saw him retain his belt with an eighth-round stoppage of Feargal McCrory, but stepping into the ring with a knockout artist like Davis is an entirely different challenge. Despite Roach’s solid record, many see this as a less competitive matchup than the Lomachenko bout fans were hoping for.

Several compelling matchups from the undercard could steal the spotlight, including Jose "Rayo" Valenzuela (14-2, 9 KOs) defending his WBA light welterweight title against heavy-hitting Gary Antuanne Russell (17-1, 17 KOs). Fans have dubbed "Rayo" the "Mexican Loma," and with both fighters packing serious firepower, this showdown is considered worthy of headliner status.
Also on the PPV portion, WBC champ Alberto Puello (22-0, 10 KOs) is set to defend against mandatory challenger Sandor Martin (42-3, 15 KOs), the Spaniard who many believe got a raw deal in his split decision loss to Teofimo Lopez in late 2022. Martin aims to redeem himself under the bright lights of New York once again, hoping the judges give him a fair shake this time around.
Rising star Yoenis Tellez (19-0, 7 KOs) collides with 34-year-old veteran Julian "J-Rock" Williams (29-4, 17 KOs) for the WBA interim junior middleweight belt to kick off the PPV. Tellez looks to further prove his worth at 154, while Williams tries to reclaim his place among the division’s elite. Overall, the card’s depth has some observers calling this undercard just as exciting - if not more - than the highly anticipated Davis-Roach main event.
