Oscar De La Hoya believes unbeaten 17-year-old prospect Dylan Capetillo has the potential to become boxing’s next major Mexican-American star.
The Golden Boy promoter acknowledged that Ryan Garcia could still claim that position through major victories and world titles, but suggested his inability to speak Spanish may limit his connection with part of the audience.
“It’s all about performances inside the ring, winning world titles and who you fight,” De La Hoya said. “You obviously have to make the effort and speak Spanish - you have to care.”
Asked whether Garcia could become “the one,” De La Hoya said it remained possible before naming Capetillo as his preferred choice.
“Can he be the one? Absolutely,” De La Hoya said. “But I truly feel the one is Capetillo.”
Capetillo (2-0, 1 KO) will make his third professional appearance on the undercard of William Zepeda vs Lamont Roach Jr. as Golden Boy continues building the teenage prospect’s profile.
