Mexican star Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (58-2-2 39 KOs) will defend his undisputed super middleweight titles against John Ryder (32-5 18 KOs) at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday, May 6, live around the world on DAZN and DAZN PPV.
Canelo Alvarez became the undisputed super-middleweight champion by defeating Caleb Plant in November 2021, achieving this feat in less than eleven months. However, he failed to secure light-heavyweight gold for the second time in his career, losing to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, which ended his 16-fight unbeaten streak since his loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2013. Canelo’s most recent fight was a unanimous decision win over Gennadiy Golovkin in September of 2022, which marked the end of their trilogy with Canelo winning two fights and a draw. Currently, he is recuperating from left wrist surgery.
On the other hand, Ryder began his professional career in 2010, winning local championships at the start. He claimed the interim WBA super-middleweight title by defeating Bilal Akkawy in May 2019 but lost to Callum Smith later that year in his attempt to retain the WBA and The Ring belts. Ryder has since won four consecutive fights, including triumphs over Daniel Jacobs and Zach Parker. He also won the interim WBO super-middleweight title by defeating Parker.
John, known as “The Gorilla,” is the second British boxer to fight Canelo Alvarez in Mexico. The first was Ryan Rhodes, who lost to Canelo via TKO in June 2011 at Arena VFG in Guadalajara.
In the co-main event, Julio Cesar Martinez (19-2, 14 KOs) defends his WBC Flyweight title against Ronal Batista (15-2, 9 KOs).
