Canelo Alvarez believes his past success in rematches proves he could make the necessary adjustments to defeat Terence Crawford in a second fight.
Crawford moved up three weight divisions from welterweight to challenge Canelo at super middleweight. He controlled the contest with superior speed, movement and timing, earning a decision victory and becoming boxing’s first post-war three-weight undisputed champion.
Canelo has since pushed for another opportunity against the recently retired Crawford. He says his previous rematches with Miguel Vazquez and Gennady Golovkin demonstrate that he performs better once he has experienced an opponent’s style.
“As a fighter, we always want revenge,” Canelo said. “If you look back, I always do good in my rematches and I know what is wrong, what I did wrong.”
Canelo faced Vazquez twice early in his career and won both meetings. He also improved against Golovkin after their first fight ended in a draw, winning the rematch before later defeating him again in their third contest.
The Mexican star remains confident he can correct the mistakes that allowed Crawford to dictate their first fight. However, he admitted that securing a rematch is more difficult because he did not include a rematch clause in the original contract.
“If the opportunity is there, it would be amazing,” Canelo said.
