Biography
Derek Chisora, born on December 29, 1983, in Mbare, Zimbabwe, is a British professional boxer known for his tenacity and never-give-up attitude. Chisora moved to the UK at an early age and began his boxing career in 2007, quickly making a name for himself in the heavyweight division. He has held multiple regional heavyweight championships, including the British and Commonwealth titles from 2010 to 2011, the European title from 2013 to 2014, and the WBO International title in 2019.
Chisora’s career has been marked by several key fights. In July 2018, Chisora faced Carlos Takam and won via an eighth-round knockout. Then, in December 2018, he suffered a defeat to Dillian Whyte, losing by a unanimous decision in a closely contested fight. In October 2019, Chisora took on David Price, securing a win through a fourth-round TKO. He battled Oleksandr Usyk in October 2020, where he lost via a unanimous decision, followed by a loss to Joseph Parker in May 2021, despite a valiant effort.
However, Chisora demonstrated his resilience by bouncing back from these setbacks. He faced Kubrat Pulev in July 2022 and came out victorious, winning the majority of the judges’ scorecards. His last fight was against Tyson Fury in December 2022 where he displayed commendable resilience, although he was outmatched from the onset.
Technical Overview
Derek Chisora has shown to prefer the up close inside fight where he can impose his pressure on his opponents. Chisora will constantly walk forward and defend his opponent’s shots by baiting a certain punch and changing his guard accordingly to defend it. For example, he will show a high guard to bait out looping punches that would go around it, just to switch his guard to a Philly Shell so he can defend the punch and counter back. Chisora loves to force the inside fight where he can lean his head on his opponent’s chest and he can bang away to their body. Chisora can be tricky to fight against on the inside since he will often continue the guard switching to confuse his opponents and while they are confused, he’s punching.
