Troy Williamson and Callum Simpson will run it back on August 8 at First Direct Bank Arena in Leeds, with the rematch set to stream live and exclusively on DAZN.
Williamson revived his career in December when he stopped Simpson in the 10th round to claim the British, Commonwealth and European super middleweight titles. The win put him in line for a possible world title shot against IBF and IBO champion Osleys Iglesias, but Simpson activated his rematch clause and forced the second fight into play.
The delay has frustrated Williamson, who has not fought since beating Simpson. He has also had to vacate the European title because the EBU does not recognize rematches, meaning only the British and Commonwealth belts will be on the line this time.
“I’ll class this as my world title fight,” Williamson said, “because I know once I get rid of him, I’ll definitely get my world title shot after.”
Simpson enters looking to repair the damage from his first professional defeat, while Williamson believes the weight cut at 168lbs will only make the rematch harder for him. “It’s only going to get harder and harder for him to make the weight,” Williamson said, predicting the second fight “won’t go past six rounds.”
The rematch also marks a notable DAZN move for Boxxer, which announced a new multi-fight partnership with the streaming platform while continuing to work with the BBC.
