Claressa Shields is heading back to Detroit - and she’s bringing her undisputed heavyweight titles with her. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and unbeaten champion (16-0, 3 KOs) will face Lani Daniels (11-2-2, 1 KO) on July 26 at Little Caesars Arena, marking her third headlining appearance at the venue.
The 36-year-old Daniels, who holds the IBF light heavyweight title, enters the bout on a seven-fight win streak. Hailing from New Zealand, Daniels is stepping up in weight for a shot at Shields’ full collection of world titles.
Shields last fought in February, dominating Danielle Perkins over 10 rounds in her hometown of Flint, Michigan. Now she returns to Detroit, a city rich with boxing history and one that Shields has helped reignite on the women’s side of the sport.
This event will be Shields’ third at Little Caesars Arena, where she’s already proven to be a major draw. Last year, she stopped Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse in front of 12,000 fans to become the undisputed heavyweight champion.
“Women’s boxing has grown by leaps and bounds since Claressa headlined the first women’s main event on national TV,” said her promoter Dmitriy Salita. With Shields back in the spotlight and Daniels chasing a monumental upset, Detroit is set for another historic night.
