Fight Details

It's here ladies and gentlemen: Canelo Alvarez will defend his three super middleweight titles against WBA mandatory challenger Edgar Berlanga on September 14th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout, set for the Mexican Independence Day weekend, will be broadcast on DAZN and Prime Video PPV.

Berlanga, 27, has earned a title shot without facing any top-level contenders, thanks to strategic maneuvering by his promoters. By avoiding risky fights against opponents like David Morrell Jr. and Caleb Plant, Berlanga has managed to secure a lucrative payday against Canelo. This approach mirrors that of Canelo's previous opponent, Jaime Munguia, who similarly avoided high-risk fights to land a title bout.

Previously, Canelo has reportedly been stripped of his IBF title due to failing to defend against his mandatory challenger. Therefore, only three of his belts will be on the line against Berlanga. However, this is unlikely to dampen fan enthusiasm, as the allure of a Mexico vs. Puerto Rico bout remains strong. Berlanga is expected to be a formidable opponent, albeit seen as the underdog in this clash.

The co-main event will feature WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (30-3-3, 18 KOs) defending his title against Danny Garcia (37-3, 21 KOs)in a twelve-round bout. This match pits the 41-year-old Lara against the inactive Garcia, who hasn’t fought since July 2022. Although some may argue that Garcia's title shot is based on his past achievements rather than recent performance, the fight promises to be intriguing nonetheless.

The next fight added to the bill is a WBA “interim” super middleweight title fight between Caleb Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) and Trevor McCumby (28-0, 21 KO). Both men were scheduled to square off on August 17 in Orlando, but the fight was postponed after McCumby suffered a cut over his right eye. Plant, a former IBF super middleweight champion, previously fought Canelo Alvarez for all four major sanctioning body belts at 168lbs in 2021, losing via eleventh-round TKO. McCumby boasts an impressive but hasn't fought anyone of note during his rise.

Speaking about the matchup, Plant said, “It feels good to be back. I’ve had some time away from the ring but I’ve used it wisely. I’ve sparred over 220 rounds in the past year and I’m feeling sharper than ever. I guarantee that on September 14 you guys will see the best Caleb Plant yet.” McCumby added, “I’m inspired by everyone who fights back, and that’s the mentality I'm bringing into this matchup on September 14.”

Moreover, former unified super bantamweight champion Stephen Fulton (21-1, 8 KOs) is set for his ring return against Carlos Castro (30-2, 14 KOs). Previously, Fulton relinquished his WBC and WBO 122 lbs titles, experiencing his first career defeat in a dramatic eighth-round TKO at the hands of Naoya Inoue. Now, the 30-year-old Philadelphia native is poised to make his mark in a new weight class as he debuts at 126 lbs. Meanwhile, Carlos Castro is riding high on a three-fight winning streak, as in his last fight in April, Carlos secured a unanimous decision victory over Belmar Preciado.

Romero returns to the ring for the first time since having his WBA super lightweight title snatched away by Isaac Cruz in March. His opponent, Jaimes, holds a decent win over former Colombian Olympian Jonathan Romero in his last outing.
