Biography
Sunny Edwards was born on January 1st, 1996, in London, England, to Terry and Larry Edwards, a couple whose sons' names are synonymous with modern British Boxing. Sunny is the younger brother of Charlie Edwards, who held the WBC flyweight title from 2018 to 2019. Like his brother Charlie, Sunny dominated as the British champion before becoming a world champion. He was a highly dominant British-level amateur boxer in his own right, winning several national titles before turning professional in 2016.
Sunny captured the IBF flyweight title on April 30, 2021, with a victory against champion Moruti Mthalane. Mthalane was entering the fight with a sixteen-fight winning streak. Sunny successfully defended his IBF belt in four fights against Jayson Mama, Muhammad Waseem, Felix Alvarado, and Andres Campos, showcasing his showtime persona at the highest levels of boxing.
In an electrifying unification clash for the flyweight titles against Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez on December 16, 2023, the opponent from San Antonio delivered a masterful performance, surpassing Edwards from London and clinching victory by stopping him in the ninth round of their anticipated 12-round title bout. This showdown, widely hailed as the premier spectacle of 2023, stands as a strong contender for recognition on the coveted boxing pound-for-pound list. The unification of the IBF and WBO flyweight championships unfolded on a memorable Saturday night at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, etching a historic chapter in the annals of the sport. Rodriguez's display of superior skills positions him as a prominent figure in the flyweight division, leaving an enduring impact on the vibrant tapestry of boxing.
Technical Overview
Sunny Edwards possesses one of the most durable chins in the flyweight division. His swift pivots allow him to evade danger effectively, allowing his showtime style to shine. He delivers heavy right-hand shots in an unorthodox manner even while moving backward. In addition to these skills, Sunny's graceful side steps and deceptive feints disorient his opponents, making them wary of his right hooks and power jabs that can come from various angles along boxing's axis. Edwards tends to switch to a Philly-style defense when near the ropes or facing intense forward pressure. His dynamic style, unseen in Great Britain since Prince Naseem, ensures that it's always a sunny day in England when Edwards steps into the ring. This unique approach not only has a cultural impact that enhances the rising star's popularity but also contributes to the rich history of Great Britain's unconventional styles in the world of boxing.
