Biography

Robeisy Ramírez, born on December 20, 1993, in Cienfuegos, Cuba, is a highly accomplished amateur and professional boxer, renowned for his willingness to make sacrifices, exceptional skills, and impressive ring IQ. His journey from the amateur ranks to becoming a professional fighter is a testament to the challenges faced within the Cuban boxing system, often romanticized but filled with hardships. Despite his considerable success in Cuba, Ramírez encountered numerous trials in his life. He suffered his first professional defeat after defecting from Cuba, losing by a split decision in 2019, just three years after defeating the now-boxing superstar Shakur Stevenson in the 2016 Rio Gold Medal bout. Ramírez faced even greater adversity outside the ring when he defected from Cuba in 2018, enduring intense international legal battles to reunite with his beloved daughter, which ultimately took until 2023.

However, his Cuban spirit danced to the rhythm of his internal desire to become a world champion. Ramírez achieved an impressive streak of 11 consecutive victories, earning himself a title shot for the vacant WBO title against Isaac Dogboe. In April 2023, he defeated Dogboe to be crowned the WBO champion. Ramírez's lifetime of experience in Cuban amateur boxing finally allowed him to shine at the highest level of professional boxing, once again showcasing the brilliance of Cuba, a country renowned for producing world-class boxers. He rapidly ascended through the ranks of the Cuban amateur boxing system, widely regarded as one of the best in the world, honing his boxing IQ, technical prowess, adaptability in the ring, and life skills, transforming him from a Cuban "household name" to an international figure in the worlds of sports and politics.

Technical Overview

Robeisy Ramírez is a fundamentally sound boxer, a true embodiment of the sweet science of boxing, and a delight for any discerning boxing enthusiast with a penchant for Cuban boxing. He possesses a high guard that demands opponents commit to full-power punches to inflict damage upon him. Ramírez maintains a strong stance, with his feet consistently shoulder-width apart, allowing him to pivot and effectively evade or unleash damaging combinations against his opponents. This alone positions Ramírez as arguably the best active Cuban boxer in the world.

While Ramírez may not currently match the punch volume of someone like Terence Crawford, many would argue that his jab rivals that of the only male two-division undisputed champion in the four-belt era. His jab glides effortlessly across the canvas, delivering significant damage and covering ground. He utilizes his lead leg to jab at his opponent's trail leg, enabling him to launch powerful jabs. Ramírez's textbook movements accentuate his ring IQ, allowing him to be precise, crafty, and educated in creating angles with his hands. This, in turn, enables him to capitalize on his fast hands and pinpoint accuracy, illuminating his opponents with well-placed shots, whether on the offensive or in counterpunching situations. Once again, he showcases the pedigree of Cuban boxing, demonstrating the dominance he has achieved from the Olympic Gold Medalist to the World Championship level.
