Biography
Kazuto Ioka (born March 24, 1989, in Sakai, Osaka) is one of Japan’s most accomplished boxers and the first Japanese fighter to win recognized world titles in four weight classes. A polished, economical technician with sharp counters and body work, Ioka has collected major belts at mini-flyweight, light-flyweight, flyweight, and super-flyweight, and unified at 105 lbs. His run at the lighter weights helped cement Japan’s modern dominance below bantamweight.
Turning pro in 2009 after a standout 95–10 amateur career, Ioka rose quickly. He captured the WBC mini-flyweight title in 2011, then unified by outpointing WBA champion Akira Yaegashi in 2012—an historic all-Japan unification. Moving up, he won the WBA (Regular) light-flyweight title in 2012 and defended it three times before climbing again to flyweight, where he claimed the WBA flyweight crown in 2015 and made five successful defenses.
After a brief retirement, Ioka returned at super flyweight and wrote history in 2019, stopping Aston Palicte to win the WBO super-flyweight title—his fourth division. He defended against unbeaten Jeyvier Cintrón and star Kosei Tanaka, then added wins over Francisco Rodríguez Jr., Ryoji Fukunaga, and avenged a split decision by outclassing Donnie Nietes in their rematch.
Ioka unified again on New Year’s Eve 2022 with a draw versus WBA champion Joshua Franco, then beat Franco in the rematch to lift the WBA super-flyweight title. He made one defense before dropping a unanimous decision to IBF champion Fernando Martínez in a July 7, 2024 unification in Tokyo.
