Biography
Jason Moloney was born on January 10, 1991, in Melbourne, Australia, and currently holds the title of WBO bantamweight world champion. He is renowned for his elite boxing pedigree, which he shares with his twin brother, Andrew Moloney, a former WBA Interim and WBO Super Flyweight champion. Together, the Moloney twins made history by becoming the first Australian set of twins to ever hold world championships.
Jason Moloney has twice challenged for the IBF bantamweight title, facing formidable opponents. His two losses came against highly respected fighters, including the pound-for-pound king, Naoya Inoue, in a battle for the IBF and WBA Super Bantamweight titles, and a narrow split decision loss to Emmanuel RodrÃguez in the WBSS quarter-finals. This demonstrates Moloney's willingness to compete against the toughest competition in a weight class that many consider fragile.
Moloney has become a popular and highly marketable figure in Australian boxing, similar to the legendary George Kambosos, helping to bring Austrian boxing into the spotlight, alongside names like Tim Tszyu. He defended his WBC Silver title and fought for the vacant WBO International bantamweight title against Aston Palicte on June 5, 2022, on the historic George Kambosos Jr. vs. Devin Haney card, which garnered widespread attention and elevated combat sports in the region.
Technical Overview
As a rhythm fighter, Moloney dances to the beat of the music, using fast-twitch footwork to deliver quick combinations. However, he faces challenges against fighters like Naoya Inoue and Terence Crawford, who disrupt their opponents' rhythm and target their bodies. This style mismatch puts Moloney at a disadvantage in matchups between rhythm fighters and rhythm-breaking opponents.
Moloney boasts a beautiful short white hook, which he effectively deploys in his battles. He can go toe-to-toe with opponents and possesses an impressive stick jab that he can throw in rapid succession. This jab helps him control the distance in the ring, making his opponents back up, crouch, and cover-up, often leading to close-range, head-to-head, and toe-to-toe exchanges.
His wide left hook is an excellent counter, even against pound-for-pound fighters like Inoue, forcing his opponents to closely monitor his every move. Moloney's heart and durability are commendable, allowing him to weather storms and return stronger in later rounds. While he can outbox opponents with finesse, Moloney also displays a healthy dose of aggression, fearlessly trading punches when necessary, making him an exciting fighter to watch.
