Biography
Edgar Berlanga, born May 18, 1997, in Brooklyn, New York, found his calling in the world of boxing. With an impressive amateur record of 162 wins against just 17 losses, Berlanga made the transition to professional boxing in 2016. He quickly made a name for himself in the boxing world, winning his first 16 professional fights by first-round knockout, a feat that earned him significant attention and acclaim.
Berlanga’s rise in the sport did not stop there. He continued his ascent by maintaining his unbeaten record against opponents such as Eric Moon in 2020, Lanell Bellows in 2020, and Demond Nicholson in 2021. Despite facing tough competition, he successfully defeated Marcelo Esteban Coceres in 2021, a fight that marked his first time going the distance in his professional career. His successful run continued with a victory over Steve Rolls in 2022.
In a controversial turn of events, Berlanga faced Roamer Alexis Angulo in June 2022, during which Berlanga attempted to bite Angulo on the shoulder. Despite the incident, Berlanga went on to win the fight by unanimous decision. The New York State Athletic Commission later fined Berlanga $10,000 and suspended him from professional boxing for a period of six months for the incident.
Technical Overview
Edgar Berlanga like several other modern pressure fighters, will apply pressure by stepping forward with his rear foot before stepping forward with his lead foot. This allows him to step his lead foot into punching range while keeping the rest of his body back. This will trick his opponent into thinking they aren’t in punching range when they actually are. Berlanga can then launch attacks on his unsuspecting opponents. This is because the lead foot is what determines the distance between two fighters. Berlanga will often opt to open up his offense with a jab then a dip to his left side to not only dodge a counter, but also load up his left hook to the body. If Berlanga is able to start landing that left body hook, he’ll be able to slow down almost anyone and quickly begin to break them down with more aggression.
