Biography
Chantelle Cameron, born on May 14, 1991, in Northampton, England, did not begin her journey in combat sports within the world of boxing. Similar to former Light Welterweight Champion Josh Taylor, who initiated his combat training in taekwondo, Cameron's entry was in kickboxing. She had an undefeated amateur record and won several major titles. Just like Taylor, Cameron's experience in other combat sports enhanced her coordination and footwork, qualities that would prove beneficial when she transitioned to boxing at the age of eighteen. During her amateur career, Cameron secured two English women's national championships. It was during this time that she initiated her enduring rivalry with Ireland's Katie Taylor at the 2011 EU Championships, where she lost in the semi-finals. This rivalry would elevate women's sports due to the technical prowess, determination, and achievements displayed by both Taylor and Cameron in every bout.
Cameron claimed her first world title in 2017 at lightweight for the IBO, defeating Viviane Obenauf. However, her professional career truly skyrocketed when she moved to the Light Welterweight division. Between 2021 and 2022, Cameron achieved the titles of WBC and Unified World Champion in the Light Welterweight category, eventually becoming the Undisputed World Champion. She successfully defended her title against fellow Undisputed Champion Katie Taylor in May of 2023, securing a Majority Decision victory.
Technical Overview
Cameron is not recognized for slow starts; instead, she possesses the ability to press even the best opponents with a precise one-two combination, forcing them against the ropes and enabling her to control the center of the ring. This trait, coupled with her mental resilience, makes it challenging for her opponents to find respite. She can engage in toe-to-toe exchanges, as evident in her rivalry with Katie Taylor, where she strategically identified superior angles of attack while maintaining pinpoint precision even amid intense combat. Cameron's counterpunching ability is a lethal asset. She can deliver devastating hooks after blocking even the most subtle wide punches, and she can swiftly execute powerful one-twos immediately after slipping an opponent's attack. This well-rounded skill set positions her as an orthodox pressure fighter who sustains minimal damage while maintaining an aggressive southpaw-like pace. Her capacity to effortlessly execute game plans, combined with her showmanship, transcends gender-based norms, challenging the male-dominant "standards" in sports and trailblazing women's sports to new levels of attention.
