Biography
Brandon Lee Figueroa was born on December 29, 1996, in Weslaco, Texas. He is an American professional boxer who held the WBC interim featherweight title starting in March 2023, and was the former WBC Super Bantamweight and WBA (Regular) super bantamweight title holder from 2019 to 2021. Brandon is the middle child of the Figueroa family and the younger brother of former WBC Lightweight champion, Omar Figueroa Jr.
The Figueroa family, much like the Benavidez family, has stormed the new school of boxing. They exhibit a sense of style, tactical Mexican aggression, good looks, and the courage to challenge the toughest fighters across multiple weight divisions. Similar to the Benavidez family, they've propelled Mexican-American boxing onto the front page of international combat news. They're highlighted as a stand-out statistic, with fathers producing multiple world champion children, such as Omar Figueroa Sr or Jose Benavidez Sr, and boasting several pound-for-pound captains like Usyks and various division champions like the Lomachenko clan. Brandon Figueroa, much like David Benavidez, emerges as the Golden child, a warrior who captures hearts both inside and outside the ring.
Technical Overview
Brandon possesses excellent posture and stance, aiding his head movement as he bobs and weaves, setting up his jaw-breaking jab or step-back jab. In his fight against the Philippine native Mark Magsayo, despite his barbed wire frame, he held himself upright against the hardest blows. He's not someone to fear solely due to his Americanized 1-2 combination, but he also showcases exceptional footwork. This allows him to evade hard body shots, maneuver opponents, and deliver eye-popping angles for landing significant blows like wide hooks and overhand rights, often winning rounds in major fights with his Americanized Olympics fighting style. The heartbreaker demonstrates talent in winning grueling battles in classic toe-to-toe fights where his Mexican heritage and chin shine through.
Figuratively speaking, Brandon isn't confined to the toe-to-toe position. He's a true technical wizard, displaying prowess in his approach before, during, and after his entire clashes. Brandon employs a strategy where he jabs to close distance, then engages in a brawl instead of rushing into a war, something uncertain for many. During toe-to-toe brawls, his active head movement helps him avoid significant punches while setting up his own. He can wrestle for center control and possesses a great chin, delivering cutting left hooks and body-zapping uppercuts that slow down even the toughest and stockiest opponents. Moreover, what's remarkably impressive about Figueroa is his ability to manipulate opponents in the clinch, a rare skill in boxing for someone without a grappling background, similar to Terence Crawford, for example.
