The June 6 show in Sheffield has taken a new direction, with Galal Yafai vs Ricardo Sandoval now officially stepping into the main event spotlight.
Initially the event should have included Dalton Smith’s first world title defense against Alberto Puello, but it has been postponed after Smith suffered an injury in training camp. The rest of the card still goed ahead, with Galal Yafai vs Ricardo Sandoval elevated to the main event for the unified WBC and WBA flyweight titles.
For Yafai, this is a moment that has been building. The Olympic gold medalist has had a disrupted run at the top level, most recently seeing his bout with Francisco Rodriguez Jr. overturned to a no contest. Now, he returns in a fight that offers both redemption and a chance to firmly establish himself among the elite at flyweight.
Across the ring, Sandoval arrives with momentum after dethroning Kenshiro Teraji to claim his titles. This will be his first defence, but also his first time headlining a card of this scale. At 27, he steps into a defining fight against a more experienced opponent on hostile ground.
The change in billing doesn’t just shift the structure of the card - it reshapes the narrative. What was once an undercard title fight is now the centerpiece, placing Yafai and Sandoval in a position where the outcome could have a direct impact on the division’s direction.
The fight will be promoted by Matchroom Boxing and broadcast live on DAZN.
