Fight Details

Mikaela Mayer and Sandy Ryan will settle unfinished business on March 29 in Las Vegas, where they’ll headline a stacked Top Rank event at the brand-new BleauLive Theater inside the Fontainebleau resort. Their bitter rivalry, which began with accusations of stolen trainers and a bizarre paint-throwing episode, boiled over in September when Mayer narrowly defeated Ryan via majority decision. Both fighters still feel there’s more to prove, and with the WBO welterweight title on the line, the stakes couldn’t be higher in this highly anticipated rematch.

Fight fans can watch all this unfold live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+, with tickets going on sale February 7.

Though Mayer emerged victorious the first time around, she’s not taking Ryan lightly. A two-division champion and 2016 Olympian, Mayer has never shied away from tough competition. The California native pushed herself to the limit in back-to-back wars with Alycia Baumgardner and Natasha Jonas, reaffirming her grit even in defeat. Now she’s determined to cement her status atop the welterweight ranks by taking Ryan out more decisively. Ryan, however, insists she wasn’t at her best that night in New York, pointing to emotional turmoil after being doused with paint before the fight. Eager to reclaim her belt, the British contender promises to come fully prepared this time, aiming to deliver what she calls "revenge, not repeat."

The card also features Brian Norman Jr. defending his WBO welterweight crown against Derrieck Cuevas (27-1-1, 19 KOs). Norman, who turned pro in January 2018, has steadily climbed the ranks by rattling off eleven straight victories in his first year and capturing attention in 2020 with a hard-fought technical decision over Flavio Rodriguez. After a dominant 2021 marked by four highlight-reel finishes, Norman inked a deal with Top Rank and went 3-0 in 2023, posting decision wins over Rodrigo Coria, Jesus Perez, and Quinton Randall.

His breakthrough came last May when he claimed the WBO interim welterweight belt with a 10th-round knockout of the previously unbeaten Giovani Santillan. Norman was later elevated to full champion status after Terence Crawford vacated the belt. “Fighting for a championship belt is every fighter’s dream,” Norman said. “Cuevas is a tough competitor who will give his all, but I can guarantee a spectacular performance come March 29.”

Cuevas, a 30-year-old knockout specialist riding a four-fight stoppage streak, enters the biggest bout of his career on a wave of momentum. Starting with a second-round demolition of Esneiker Correa in December 2022, Cuevas stayed active in 2023 with three fights in Panama, capped off by a sixth-round TKO over once-beaten Marlon Aguas in December. The Vegas showdown will mark Cuevas’ eighth appearance on U.S. soil. “I’m grateful for the chance to fight in Las Vegas for a world title,” Cuevas said. “I respect Norman, but on March 29, a new champion will be crowned.”

In addition, the undercard showcases red-hot featherweight Bruce "Shu Shu" Carrington as he battles rugged Mexican veteran Jose Enrique Vivas (23-3, 12 KOs).

Carrington catapulted into the WBO’s top contender position after debuting as a pro in October 2021. The 27-year-old from Brownsville, Brooklyn, made a splashy entrance into 2024 by delivering four consecutive victories. In February, he gained widespread attention with a highlight-reel fourth-round knockout of Bernard Torres - an explosive finish that went viral and landed on SportsCenter’s Top 10. Three months later, he stopped Brayan De Gracia in the eighth round, then overcame a formidable challenge in September with a hard-fought majority decision over Sulaiman Segawa. Carrington wrapped up the year in November by outclassing Dana Coolwell on the undercard of the Jake Paul–Mike Tyson event in Arlington, Texas, solidifying his reputation as a rising star.

Vivas, a rugged 30-year-old from Mexico, began his career on a torrid 17-0 run before suffering his first defeat at the hands of Ruben Villa in September 2019. Refusing to be derailed, Vivas reeled off four straight wins, including a notable 10-round verdict over the unbeaten Carlos Jackson in July 2020 and an eight-round triumph against Louie Coria in May 2021. Although he dropped a narrow decision to eventual title challenger Eduardo Baez the following March and lost to Joet Gonzalez in April 2023, Vivas bounced back in February with a blistering first-round TKO of Jonathan Aguilar. Now, he prepares to test himself against the ever-improving Carrington - a fight that promises fireworks as both boxers seek to break into the next tier of their division.
