Biography
Tevin Farmer, born on July 30, 1990, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an American professional boxer standing at 5 feet 6 inches tall. Growing up in the dangerous streets of North Philadelphia, a city known for its toughness and historical reputation as a “Fight Town,” Pennsylvania, particularly Philadelphia. Farmer is one of 12 siblings and shares a strong bond with his family, who have supported him throughout his career. Before boxing, he was athletic and participated in sports like football and basketball. His introduction to boxing came when he followed one of his brothers to the gym. Farmer’s amateur career was brief, consisting of only 16 fights with a record of 12 wins and 4 losses.
Farmer turned professional at 19, making his debut on February 10, 2011. After his 12th fight in 2012, Farmer’s dedication intensified, leading to a championship turnaround. In December 2017, he fought Kenichi Ogawa for the vacant IBF super featherweight title. Although he initially lost by split decision, the result was later changed to a no contest after Ogawa tested positive for a banned substance. Farmer captured the IBF title on August 3, 2018, by defeating Billy Dib in Australia via unanimous decision. He successfully defended his title four times, with notable victories over James Tennyson, Jono Carroll, and Guillaume Frenois.
In 2017, Farmer survived a shooting incident where a bullet passed through his hand, a traumatic event that might have ended the careers of most fighters. Outside of boxing, Farmer is in a relationship with Ms. Poca, and together they run a YouTube channel titled “Life As Tevin & Poca,” which gives fans insight into their personal lives.
Technical Overview
Tevin Farmer maintains a sweet persona, reminiscent of Sweet Pea Whitaker, especially when people perceive him as gentle. Watching him box feels like a cleanse for the boxing soul; he effortlessly slips jabs by minimally turning his cheek or rolling his shoulder. Farmer often remains in the pocket, inches from danger, but his calm demeanor allows him to navigate this risk effectively. He employs a shoulder roll and quick pivots to escape from the ropes, but what truly sets him apart is his ability to bait punches using slight hip feints and quick jabs.
Farmer’s defensive style is not about flashiness; it’s about efficiency. With his hands low and eyes high, he reads everything in the ring. His footwork is minimal yet effective; small half-steps backward or lateral movements help him reset angles without expending unnecessary energy. Unlike fighters who depend on exaggerated slips or risky leans, Farmer's approach is subtle: he rolls shots off his shoulders or spine just enough to make opponents miss while maintaining balance and readiness to counter. One of his most impressive defensive displays occurred during his fight against Guillaume Frenois, where he successfully dodged 13 punches.
Farmer’s combinations typically begin with a double jab or a measuring touch jab, followed by a lead left or a sneaky right hook around his opponent's guard. He excels at capitalizing on openings between shots, especially after ducking under a hook; he often springs up with a counter right hook or a quick uppercut.
For example, he might parry a jab with his lead hand, then immediately slip to his right to avoid a cross, creating a new angle for a body shot or uppercut. Inside the clinch, Farmer uses wrestling-style overhooks and underhooks—not to grapple, but to subtly control and reset his positioning. He moves within the clinch with short steps and hip pivots, never compromising his stance or putting unnecessary strain on his back.
