Biography
Subriel Matías, known as “El Orgullo de Maternillo,” is a professional boxer from Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Born on March 31, 1992, he stands 5 feet 8 inches tall with a reach of 71 inches. Matías began his professional boxing career on December 19, 2015, at the age of 23, defeating Juan Rojas via first-round TKO. He quickly gained a reputation for his aggressive style and knockout power, achieving a perfect knockout-to-win ratio in his early career.
Throughout his career, Matías has faced several notable opponents. On February 25, 2023, he secured the IBF Super Lightweight Title by defeating undefeated Argentine Jeremías Ponce by unanimous decision. However, in his first title defense on June 15, 2024, he lost to Australian Liam Paro by unanimous decision.
Technical Overview
Subriel Matías’s decision to box tall, much like the Ottomans using Gallatin guns from the high ground, is rooted in his strategic approach to controlling the ring. Much like the Ottomans, who used their position on high ground to maximize their firepower and ensure that they held the advantage in battle, Matías uses his height and reach to dominate his opponents.
By maintaining a tall stance, Matías ensures that he is constantly in control of the distance between him and his opponents, similar to how a military force would use the advantage of elevation to protect their territory and strike with precision. This approach allows him to utilize his long jab and straight punches effectively, making it harder for his opponents to close the distance and get inside his range. His physical advantage enables him to dictate the pace and force his adversaries to deal with his powerful shots, much like the Ottomans did to enemy forces trying to challenge them from lower ground.
Furthermore, Matías’s ability to box tall also allows him to utilize his power with full leverage behind each punch, as his body is fully extended, just like a Gallatin gun positioned to fire with maximum impact. This makes his shots not only hard to avoid but also difficult to withstand, just as the high ground provided the Ottomans with an undeniable force of impact on the battlefield. His tall stance, therefore, is not just a physical trait—it’s an integral part of his strategy, one that allows him to engage in controlled, calculated aggression while minimizing risks to himself.
