Biography

Jonathan González Ortiz (born April 24, 1991) is a Puerto Rican professional boxer. He held the WBO junior flyweight title from 2021 to 2024, making three successful defenses. As an amateur, González captured gold medals at the 2008 AIBA Youth World Championships and the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games, both at flyweight.

Nicknamed “Bomba”, González is known for his southpaw style, fast counterpunching, and ring IQ. He began boxing under the guidance of his father, Luis González, who was a Golden Gloves champion in the early 1980s. By age four, González was already training, and by his teens he had developed into one of Puerto Rico’s brightest amateur prospects.

Turning professional in 2011, González campaigned in the lower weight divisions and captured multiple regional titles, including the WBO NABO flyweight and light flyweight championships. After an unsuccessful challenge for the WBO flyweight title against Kosei Tanaka in 2019, González rebounded by moving down to light flyweight.

In October 2021, he scored the biggest win of his career by defeating Elwin Soto via split decision to claim the WBO junior flyweight championship. He went on to defend the title three times, earning victories over Mark Anthony Barriga, Shokichi Iwata, and Rene Santiago. González lost the belt in October 2024 to Anthony Olascuaga.
