Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez will defend his WBA interim flyweight title against unbeaten contender Abraham Perez on June 14 at GLC Live in Grand Rapids, Michigan, live on DAZN.
Gonzalez (29-4-1, 14 KOs), a 35-year-old Puerto Rican southpaw and former WBO light flyweight champion, sees this as another step toward a bigger goal.
“At 35 years old, I’m a two-division world champion, proving age is just a number,” Gonzalez said. “I see myself becoming a 3-division champion real soon under this banner.”
The veteran expects his experience, speed and ring IQ to be the difference against Perez. “My team looked Perez up - he’s undefeated and ranked top of the division - but my experience will show on fight night,” Gonzalez said. “I’m going to keep working on my speed and IQ, that will be the thing that sets me apart.”
Perez (14-0, 7 KOs), a 27-year-old from El Paso, Texas, enters off a decision win over Esneth Domingo in April and now gets his biggest opportunity. “My whole career I’ve been preparing for moments like this,” Perez said. “I’ve been calling for the best - now it’s time to prove it.”
