Devin Haney

Devin Haney was born on November 17, 1998, in San Francisco, California, and is an American professional boxer. Raised in a boxing family under the guidance of his father, Bill Haney, he developed a passion for the sport at an early age. Haney turned professional at just 17 years old and quickly built a reputation as one of boxing's brightest young talents thanks to his speed, sharp fundamentals, and disciplined approach inside the ring.

Haney's rise through the professional ranks was rapid. After capturing the WBC Youth World Lightweight title in 2018, he claimed the WBC interim lightweight championship the following year before being elevated to full world champion. Successful title defenses against Alfredo Santiago, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Jorge Linares, and Joseph Diaz established him as one of the division's elite fighters. His defining moment came in 2022 when he defeated George Kambosos Jr. to become the undisputed lightweight world champion, later reaffirming his dominance with another unanimous decision victory in their immediate rematch.

Haney made the final defense of his undisputed lightweight championship against three-division world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko in May 2023. The bout ended with Haney retaining his titles by unanimous decision in a closely contested and widely debated fight that became one of the most discussed matchups of the year. Moving up to super lightweight, Haney captured the WBC title in December 2023 with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Regis Prograis, becoming a two-division world champion.

His momentum was interrupted in 2024 after a dramatic clash with Ryan Garcia, a bout that was later ruled a no contest following Garcia's failed drug test. Haney returned to action in May 2025 with a convincing unanimous decision over former unified champion Jose Ramirez, showing little ring rust after more than a year away from competition. Later that year, he moved up to the welterweight division and challenged unbeaten WBO champion Brian Norman Jr. in Riyadh. Haney scored an early knockdown and earned a unanimous decision to become a three-division world champion, adding another significant achievement to an already accomplished career.

Devin Haney primarily fights out of the Philly shell defense, using his lead shoulder to roll off punches coming from the side of his low lead hand. As a long, tall fighter for his weight, Haney’s best weapon is his long jab which he can shoot with a lot of speed and power. The most important quality of Haney’s jab, and moreover his game as a whole, is his timing. Since the jab is known as the most important punch in boxing, it is also the most common punch in boxing, and this means high-level boxers will always have ways to counter the jab. Haney doesn’t just shoot his jab haphazardly. He will smartly shoot it from long range where he can quickly step back away from a counter, or he will time it after he picks up on a habit he can exploit. Haney will also use his lead hand to probe his opponents and find openings for his right hand to land. By showing his lead hand, it allows him to see how his opponents react to it. Then he will draw out the same reaction and counter it with a right hand.
