Technical Overview
Caleb Plant is a Philly Shell user who specializes in the use of the lead hand to control his opponents. He will constantly stick his lead hand out in his opponent’s face which serves several purposes. His lead hand will occupy the empty space between himself and his opponent which doesn’t allow his opponent to move closer to him, or set up their own punches. It acts as an early warning device where if his opponent were to challenge the lead hand by stepping in, Plant will be ready to intercept them with a punch of his own.
Plant is exceptional at distance control mainly due to this lead hand. He understands that distance is his first line of defense, and so if his opponent steps into the range of his extended lead hand, Plant can also use his legs to step away from danger and reset the situation. Distance control also goes hand in hand with setting up offense. Plant is capable of launching attacks from mid-range where he can use his lead hand to control his opponent’s guard, then misdirect them with a jab to the body. He will also mix this up with a lead left hook around the guard which he can flow into combinations. The beauty of this mixup is that the body jab conditions the opponent to tighten their guard. Once this happens, the tightened guard allows the opening for the hook to land around it. To take this even further, Plant will lower his level before throwing to make it look like he is going to shoot another jab, only to switch to the hook to catch his opponent off guard.
