Caleb Plant (22-1, 13 KOs) and David Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs), both former super middleweight champions, will square off on March 25 of 2023 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Showtime PPV.
The winner of their 12-round, 168-pound bout, will be Canelo Alvarez's WBC super middleweight title's mandatory challenger. Plant was stopped in the 11th round of Alvarez's title unification fight in November 2021 at MGM Grand Garden Arena, but Benavidez also wants his own chance to face the fully unified 168-pound champion.
Plant spent much of his previous fight against Anthony Dirrell in October 2022 running around the ring, forcing the 38-year-old former two-time WBC champion to chase him.
One of the main reasons Plant knocked Dirrell out was that he became careless while chasing and left himself open when Caleb suddenly stopped moving for a split second and threw a left hook that knocked him out cleanly.
