The showdown between IBF and Ring cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia and New Zealand’s David Nyika is set at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Australia.
Nyika, a 2020 Olympic bronze medalist, steps in as a replacement for Huseyin Cinkara, who withdrew due to injury. Despite the short notice, Nyika expressed confidence, stating, "This is the moment every fighter dreams of, and I’ve got the entire nation of New Zealand behind me. I know how tough Jai is, but I’m ready for this challenge."
Opetaia, who won his titles in a grueling war against Mairis Briedis in 2022, has shown both skill and grit in his career. However, Briedis exposed vulnerabilities in Opetaia's ability to handle sustained pressure, a factor Nyika's camp will likely seek to exploit.

This fight is also an intriguing step up for Nyika, who has faced mostly journeyman-level opposition since turning pro in 2021. His third-round knockout of 38-year-old Tommy Karpency in September was his most recent outing, but the quality gap between Karpency and Opetaia is vast. Whether Nyika can transition from fighting rudimentary opposition to challenging a world-class champion remains the key question.
For Opetaia, victory could pave the way to unification bouts or high-profile matchups later in 2025.
