WBC minimumweight champion Melvin Jerusalem defends his belt against Yudai Shigeoka for the second time at the Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, Japan. The 30-year-old Filipino star first dethroned Shigeoka in March 2024 by split decision, scoring two knockdowns en route to the title. He then made a successful defense this past September, dominating unbeaten Mexican Luis Castillo over twelve rounds.
Jerusalem, no stranger to pulling off upsets in Japan, previously defeated Masataka Taniguchi via a second-round stoppage in March 2023 to capture the WBO version of the minimumweight title. He later relinquished that belt in a unification showdown with WBA/WBO titleholder Oscar Collazo. This upcoming clash marks Jerusalem’s second defense of the WBC crown he claimed from Shigeoka.
Japan’s Shigeoka, 27, became a WBC champion in only his eighth professional fight with a decisive victory over Thailand’s Panya Pradabsri in October 2023. He lost the title to Jerusalem in their first meeting but now aims to reclaim it in front of a supportive home crowd.
With this rematch, both boxers could set themselves up for a unification bout with either Pedro Taduran or Collazo - two fellow champions in the packed minimumweight division. Meanwhile, the WBC has also ordered a rematch between Pradabsri and Carlos Canizales, after their contentious decision last December in Bangkok.
