Yudai Shigeoka has provided a positive but realistic update on his younger brother Ginjiro Shigeoka, who continues to recover after suffering a serious brain injury following his fight with Pedro Taduran last year.
Earlier, the former IBF strawweight champion collapsed in the ring after losing a 12-round split decision to Taduran on May 24, 2025, and later underwent a craniotomy. He spent 303 days in hospital before being released on March 25, though he still requires full-time care.
Yudai said his brother’s progress is slow, but there have been encouraging signs. “He’s gradually improving - he’s now able to eat little-by-little, and he smiles more than before,” Yudai told The Ring.
The former WBC 105-pound champion, who retired while dealing with his brother’s situation, said Ginjiro’s rehabilitation remains intense. “He truly is a fighter,” Yudai said.
Away from boxing, Yudai is also balancing family life and running Shinonome cafe, a business he hopes can become a welcoming space for both local families and Ginjiro. He has even placed Ginjiro’s couch inside the cafe so his brother can visit and feel at home.
