David Benavidez will be moving up to light heavyweight to face Oleksandr Gvozdyk. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that this match will contend for the interim light heavyweight title.
In 2023, at just 27 years old, Benavidez had a standout year as ESPN’s No. 2 super middleweight. The former champion notched a significant unanimous decision victory over Caleb Plant in March followed by a decisive sixth-round knockout of Demetrius Andrade. These wins over seasoned champions sparked widespread anticipation of a potential showdown with Canelo Alvarez, boxing's top star and undisputed super middleweight champion. Despite his perfect record and public interest, Alvarez has yet to confirm Benavidez as an opponent, opting instead to return on May 4 against an undecided contender.

Benavidez's potential adversaries aren't limited to Alvarez; a fight with either Beterbiev or Bivol could also serve as an attractive alternative. Meanwhile, the towering 6-foot-2 Benavidez must first overcome Gvozdyk, a former light heavyweight champion. Gvozdyk returned to the ring last February after a challenging recovery from a TKO loss to Beterbiev in 2020, which followed a triumphant 10th-round KO of Adonis Stevenson in 2018. Despite stepping away from the sport temporarily, Gvozdyk has been gradually rebuilding his form, with recent victories signaling his readiness for high-stakes competition.
