Biography
Tyrrell Anthony Herndon, born on July 29, 1987, in San Antonio, Texas, is an American heavyweight boxer Herndon’s journey into boxing began after his time as a defensive end at Copperas Cove High School, where he showcased his athletic prowess on the football field. He was even a high school teammate of future Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III. Transitioning into the world of boxing, he quickly made a name for himself in the amateur circuit, winning the South Texas Golden Gloves tournament.
Turning professional in 2015, Herndon steadily built his career, facing a mix of seasoned veterans and rising prospects. Despite setbacks, including losses to notable fighters like Efe Ajagba and Richard Torrez Jr., Herndon show his heart is as big as Texas bouncy. A highlight of his career came in March 2023 when he captured the Universal Boxing Organization’s heavyweight title in Colombia, overcoming last-minute challenges to secure the belt. In 2024, Herndon continued to, securing a split-decision victory over Miree Coleman to claim the Texas State Heavyweight Title.
Herndon remains connected to his roots in San Antonio, Texas. He is a father to two children, with his daughter, Thais Cataleya Herndon, born on April 24, 2023.
Technical Overview
Tyrrell Herndon moves like a nimble NFL lineman—light on his feet, yet grounded with purpose. His footwork reflects his football roots in Texas, where he developed a natural understanding of weight distribution—when to stay high to pivot out of danger, and when to sit low to generate power. His movement shows influence from the slick athleticism of African-American greats from the Four Kings era.
In the ring, Herndon prefers classic but effective combinations. His go-to is the 1-2 (jab-cross) to establish range and rhythm, often followed by a left hook to the body or head. He mixes in double jabs to disrupt timing and creates openings for uppercuts when opponents tighten their guard.
Early in his career, Herndon struggled with overcommitting to punches and falling off balance, which left him open to counters. After key setbacks—such as his disqualification against Brandon Glanton and the stoppage loss to Richard Torrez Jr.—he made critical adjustments. Like many football athletes crossing into boxing, Herndon had to relearn how to take and give impact. Football emphasizes short collisions. Boxing requires sustained control and subtle rhythm. At first, Herndon would explode forward without proper pacing or head movement, which made him easy to time.
He adjusted by modeling his style after Texas-trained fighters like those under Derrick James. Similar to Errol Spence Jr. and Frank Martin, Herndon learned to work behind the jab, keep his base under him, and defend with his hands instead of absorbing damage. His defense became more structured—catching and slipping rather than reacting late. He also took cues from fighters like the Charlo brothers and Regis Prograis, learning to apply pressure. This hybrid of pressure and control defines Herndon’s current style and explains why the Texas boxing scene continues to produce well-rounded, high-level talent.
