Biography
Shakhram Giyasov is an Uzbek professional boxer competing in the welterweight and super-lightweight divisions. Nicknamed “Wonder Boy,” Giyasov is widely regarded as one of Uzbekistan’s most accomplished modern fighters. Born on 7 July 1993 in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, he fights from an orthodox stance and first gained international recognition through an outstanding amateur career that included Olympic and world championship success.
Giyasov began boxing at the age of 12 in Bukhara under trainers Olim Mukhammedov and Ravshan Khodjaev. As an amateur, he developed into one of the elite welterweights in the world. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he won the silver medal, defeating fighters such as Youba Sissokho, Eimantas Stanionis, Roniel Iglesias, and Mohammed Rabii before losing in the final to Kazakhstan’s Daniyar Yeleussinov. He followed that achievement with an even bigger success in 2017, capturing gold medals at both the World Championships in Hamburg and the Asian Championships in Tashkent, cementing his reputation as one of the top amateur boxers of his generation.
Giyasov made his professional debut in March 2018, immediately showcasing his explosive punching power by knocking out Nicolas Atilio Velazquez in the opening round with a body shot. He quickly built momentum with stoppage victories over fighters such as Daniel Echeverria, Albert Mensah, Julio Laguna, and experienced former world champion Darleys Perez, whom he knocked out inside thirty seconds in one of the most impressive performances of his early professional career.
Known for his aggressive pressure, sharp body punching, and combination work, Giyasov rapidly emerged as one of the brightest prospects in the welterweight division. In 2019, he signed with Matchroom Sport under promoter Eddie Hearn, significantly raising his international profile. Around this period, he also faced tougher and more experienced opposition, including Emanuel Taylor, who pushed him the distance in a competitive ten-round fight that tested Giyasov’s composure and durability.
After a brief period of inactivity during the COVID era, Giyasov returned with dominant wins over Wiston Campos, Patricio Lopez Moreno, and Cristian Rafael Coria. In May 2022, he fought Christian Gomez on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol, scoring three knockdowns en route to a wide unanimous decision victory. The performance further demonstrated both his offensive firepower and ability to compete on major international boxing stages.
