Ryad Merhy, born on November 28, 1992, in Ouragahio, Ivory Coast, and brought up in Belgium, crafted a path that swiftly blasted him to the highest level of professional boxing, cruiserweight. From an Ivorian boy to Belgian dominance of the boxing world, Merhy’s journey tells the story of the unbelievable hard work and talent captured in a single person.
Starting his career with a bang, he took the WBC Silver International cruiserweight title and the WBA Inter-Continental cruiserweight. The most significant accolade of his career came on January 2021 when he was promoted to WBA Regular cruiserweight world champion, making him Belgium’s first boxing world champion. The fact that the promotion occurred is evidence that the 28-year-old boxer had matured into dominance and was ready for the task. However, a difficult loss to Arsen Goulamirian for the WBA interim cruiserweight grew his career even more when he bounced back back stronger.
The new phase of his career then saw him defend the title successfully against challenging boxers, making him a sensational cruise. However, struggling to make the weight limit in cruiser prompted him to vacate the title and move up one category to bridge. Vacating the belt title in 2022 due to his refusal to fight Goulamirian in a consolidation bout was the message that the 29-year-old was done at that weight.
