On April 13th, the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, will host a heavyweight showcase featuring Jared Anderson against Ryad Merhy, broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN+. This event not only highlights Anderson, a rising contender but also pits Efe Ajagba against Guido Vianello in a ten-round heavyweight bout, setting the stage for a night of intense competition.
Anderson faces Merhy, a relatively unknown contender with a good record. Merhy’s recent split decision victory over Tony Yoka, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist, marks a significant, albeit understated, achievement in his career. However, skepticism remains about the match-up’s competitive balance, especially considering Anderson’s mixed performances, notably against Charles Martin, which exposed vulnerabilities in his approach.

The fight against Merhy serves as a litmus test for Anderson's readiness for the heavyweight elite. Despite his undefeated record and Top Rank's backing, Anderson's true potential is yet to be fully realized. This bout offers him an opportunity to dispel doubts and demonstrate growth beyond the cautious, step-back style that has characterized his recent outings.

Top Rank's matchmaking reflects a cautious strategy, aiming to gradually build Anderson's experience without rushing him into the deep waters of heavyweight boxing. The division's current landscape, dominated by names like Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk, and Anthony Joshua, presents a formidable challenge for any newcomer aiming for the top.
In the undercard, Robson Conceição (17-2-1, 8 KOs) fights against Jose Guardado (15-1-1, 5 KOs).

Guardado, from Ensenada, Mexico, has never fought outside of his home country and is coming off a second-round stoppage over Aramis Solis last November.
