Biography
Román Alberto González Luna, famously known as “Chocolatito,” was born on June 16, 1987, in Managua, Nicaragua. Standing at 5 feet 3 inches with a reach of 64 inches he has been a dominant force across multiple lighter weight divisions.
González made his professional debut in 2005 at the age of 18. He has held world titles in four weight classes: minimumweight, light flyweight, flyweight, and super flyweight, becoming the first Nicaraguan boxer to achieve championships in four divisions.
Technical Overview
"Chocolatito," presents a unique and dynamic fighting style that blends the best aspects of Japanese and Mexican boxing. His style is reminiscent of a character from Hajime no Ippo, combining the relentless pressure typical of Mexican fighters with the precision and rhythm of Japanese boxers. González is a master at maintaining constant pressure on his opponents, wearing them down with a high volume of punches, especially to the body. This Mexican-style pressure fighting is paired with the fluidity of his head movement, which is reminiscent of a metronome. He moves his head side to side with purpose, always staying elusive while continuing to advance on his opponent.
His punches are not just about power but also about timing and unpredictability. González employs leaping hooks, flickering jabs, and what can be described as “frog punches,” which make use of his agility and ability to surprise his opponents. These punches are delivered with precision, often catching his opponent off guard. He has a natural rhythm to his offense, seamlessly transitioning between jabs, hooks, and body shots. This fluidity in his attack allows him to constantly adjust his offense based on what his opponent gives him, a trait often seen in the most skilled fighters.
González also incorporates the classical Mexican high guard, a defensive technique that protects him from devastating shots while allowing him to launch powerful counterattacks. His high guard, paired with his impeccable footwork, enables him to defend effectively while staying in range to unleash his offensive onslaught. The high guard also helps him absorb the punches aimed at his head, particularly shots aimed at disrupting his equilibrium. His ability to roll with punches while staying in the pocket and keeping up his offensive output is one of his key strengths.
As a lightweight, González fits perfectly within the mold of many of the characters from Hajime no Ippo, who exhibit speed, agility, and high-intensity pressure. In real life, González embodies these traits as a fighter, showcasing his ability to move quickly, slip punches, and relentlessly push forward with his attack. His style is a perfect fusion of Mexican pressure-fighting techniques, the strategic head movement seen in Japanese boxing.
