Mario Barrios

Mario “El Azteca” Barrios is a tall, rangy boxer known for his aggressive style and willingness to take on tough challenges. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Barrios built a strong reputation early in his career with an unbeaten run that led to a WBA super lightweight world title.

He captured the WBA (Regular) 140-lb belt in 2019 and defended it in action-packed fights, showing a mix of size, volume punching, and grit. In 2021, he stepped up to face Gervonta Davis in a high-profile showdown. Barrios boxed well at times and even had moments of success, but Davis’ power ultimately led to a stoppage loss. The fight proved Barrios wasn’t afraid of elite opposition.

After moving up to welterweight, Barrios continued testing himself against top names like Keith Thurman. Though he came up short, he remained competitive and gained valuable experience at 147 pounds.

In 2023, Barrios revived his momentum with a strong win over Yordenis Ugas to claim the interim WBC welterweight title, putting himself back in the championship picture.

His last two fights showed just how competitive he remains at the top level. In November 2024, he fought Abel Ramos to a split draw in a dramatic battle for the WBC welterweight title — both men hit the canvas, with Ramos dropped in round two and Barrios down in round six. Then in July 2025, Barrios went 12 hard rounds with boxing legend Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, fighting to a majority draw in a close, tactical contest.
