Biography
Mario “El Azteca” Barrios is a tall, rangy boxer known for his aggressive style and willingness to take on tough challenges. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Barrios built a strong reputation early in his career with an unbeaten run that led to a WBA super lightweight world title.
He captured the WBA (Regular) 140-lb belt in 2019 and defended it in action-packed fights, showing a mix of size, volume punching, and grit. In 2021, he stepped up to face Gervonta Davis in a high-profile showdown. Barrios boxed well at times and even had moments of success, but Davis’ power ultimately led to a stoppage loss. The fight proved Barrios wasn’t afraid of elite opposition.
After moving up to welterweight, Barrios continued testing himself against top names like Keith Thurman. Though he came up short, he remained competitive and gained valuable experience at 147 pounds.
In 2023, Barrios revived his momentum with a strong win over Yordenis Ugas to claim the interim WBC welterweight title, putting himself back in the championship picture.
His last two fights showed just how competitive he remains at the top level. In November 2024, he fought Abel Ramos to a split draw in a dramatic battle for the WBC welterweight title — both men hit the canvas, with Ramos dropped in round two and Barrios down in round six. Then in July 2025, Barrios went 12 hard rounds with boxing legend Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, fighting to a majority draw in a close, tactical contest.
Even without a clear win in those bouts, Barrios proved he can hang with experienced, high-level opposition. His size, durability, and willingness to fight the best keep him right in the mix in the welterweight division.
Technical Overview
Barrios exhibits a Mexican high guard as he confidently strides forward, employing his jab to control the pace. As he gradually closes the distance, he adeptly maneuvers into the range where his potent bar uppercut or his extensive combination arsenal, comprising around 16 varied strikes, comes into play, allowing him to methodically advance against his opponents. His strategic pivoting grants him control of the ring’s center or enables him to drive his adversaries toward the ropes. At times, Barrios employs trapping tactics, inviting opponents into frenetic exchanges despite his already potent Mexican combinations, which often prove damaging. Notably, his transition to the 147 division hasn’t hindered his ability to cover ground efficiently or maintain a strong position with the use of a simple jab. He has displayed agility by seamlessly executing backward jumps, showcasing nonstop footwork that includes effortless bobbing and weaving, all while amplifying his power significantly. His nuanced head movement isn’t confined to lateral shifts but extends to intricate vertical maneuvers, making it a challenge for opponents to land punches, even when Barrios appears stationary. In his recent bouts, he’s demonstrated exceptional evasion skills, making it difficult for opponents to trap him against the ropes. Barrios continually works on enhancing his head movement and ring positioning, incorporating pivots and footwork to his advantage. Notably, he’s been seen implementing switches lately, particularly when looking to secure a decisive stoppage.
