Ryan Garcia has been fined $5,000 by the WBC after missing the initial deadline for his mandatory 14-day weight check ahead of his February 21 showdown with WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios.
According to a notification sent by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman on February 10, Garcia failed to submit video proof of his weight by the required February 7 deadline. “Champion Barrios did comply with the video of this mandatory safety rule. The WBC hereby imposes a $5000 (five thousand dollars) fine for non-compliance,” Sulaiman stated, adding that further disciplinary action could follow if the submission was not received promptly.
Garcia later provided proof of his weight at 154.2lbs, within the permitted 5 percent above the 147lbs contracted limit. Barrios submitted his video on time at 153.0lbs. Both fighters were required to be no heavier than 155lbs at the 14-day mark and had reportedly been within 10 percent of the contracted limit 30 days before the bout, which headlines a DAZN pay-per-view card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The next checkpoint comes Saturday, when both fighters must weigh no more than 3 percent above 147lbs. They are also enrolled in random drug testing through VADA, with no issues reported. Garcia even publicly shared confirmation of a negative test result.
This fine is also not the first one for Garcia. He previously missed weight for his April 2024 clash with Devin Haney, and that bout was later ruled a no-contest following a positive test for ostarine, resulting in a one-year suspension and forfeiture of more than $1.1 million in purse money.
