Jermaine Franklin, known as the “989 Assassin,” is a hardworking American heavyweight who rose from long shifts on roofing crews to high-stakes bouts under the global spotlight. Before gaining prominence in boxing, Franklin juggled 12-hour shifts at a roofing company while caring for his family. Describing his relentless schedule, he said, “I go 7 to 7, I get off work, I had to take my kids to school at like 8:30. Then I come home, get a little bit of sleep, pick my kids up at 3, and I go to work in four hours.” Turning professional on April 4, 2015, Franklin made an explosive debut with a first-round knockout of Deshawn Jenkins. He went on to win his next 20 bouts, including victories over Jerry Forrest, Cory Phelps, and Rydell Booker—establishing himself as one of America’s rising heavyweight contenders.

In November 2022, Franklin faced former WBC interim heavyweight champion Dillian Whyte at Wembley Arena in London. Despite a strong showing, he lost a close majority decision, with scores of 115–115 and 116–112 (twice). On April 1, 2023, he stepped into the ring with former two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua at The O2 Arena. Though Franklin went the distance, Joshua claimed a unanimous decision with scorecards of 118–111 and 117–111 (twice).

Refusing to let the losses define him, Franklin rebounded on July 15, 2023, with a unanimous decision win over Isaac Munoz Gutierrez in Detroit, Michigan. He continued his comeback with a dominant technical knockout of veteran Devin Vargas on May 24, 2024, at Wayne State Fieldhouse in Detroit.

Outside the ring, Franklin is a devoted father of three—two daughters, aged 11 and 7, and a son approaching two years old. He often describes his children as his deepest source of motivation: “They’re the greatest inspiration I could have.” In 2018, Franklin signed with Salita Promotions, headed by former world title challenger Dmitriy Salita, who has played a vital role in elevating Franklin’s profile.
