Biography

Demetrius Andrade, born on February 26, 1988, is a renowned professional boxer from the United States. Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Andrade began boxing at the age of 6 and quickly became a recognized name across the United States, earning the nickname “Boo Boo.”

Andrade’s skills made him a challenging opponent, and by 2013, he had already made a name for himself by winning many professional fights. Some of his key career highlights include winning the U.S. national championships and Golden Gloves twice each, a gold medal at the 2007 World Championships, and representing the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics; all in the welterweight division.

Andrade’s professional career took off when he won the WBO light middleweight title between 2013-2015, the WBA (Regular) title in 2017, and the WBO middleweight title from 2018 to 2022. Having won Artur Akavov in 2019, he fought Luke Keeler, where he scored two early knockdowns and won the fight in the ninth round the following year. In 2021, he defended his title against Liam Williams, scoring a knockdown in round two and winning the bout by unanimous decision. Later in the same year, he defeated Jason Quigley by second-round TKO. Then, after having a huge break from boxing for more than a year, Demetrius met with Demond Nicholson at the beginning of 2023, eventually winning the fight via unanimous decision.

Technical Overview

Demetrius Andrade operates out of a wide southpaw stance that allows him to shift his weight onto either his lead foot or rear foot to manipulate his head and body position. Andrade will often play with his lead foot position, inching it closer or further away from his opponent to make it look like he is closer, or further away than he really is. He will often step his lead foot forward while keeping the rest of his body back and this tricks his opponent into thinking he is out of range when he really is in range and he can sneak punches in before they are ready to defend. The wide stance has its downsides as it doesn’t allow him to take very big steps whether it's stepping forward to attack, or stepping away to defend. Andrade is excellent at constantly moving his head off the centerline as he inches forward on his opponent. This prevents his opponent from setting up punches since a moving target is significantly more difficult to hit, and when they do attempt to punch, Andrade is excellent at making them miss and countering with big shots of his own.
