In a commanding performance, William Zepeda made a clear statement by defeating Mercito Gesta in just six rounds at the Commerce Casino, California. With an impressive 618 punches thrown in those rounds, Zepeda’s relentless volume, rather than sheer power, proved too much for Gesta. Despite Gesta’s experience, he spent much of the fight pinned against the ropes, unable to match Zepeda's energy and pace.

Post-victory, Zepeda’s sights are firmly set on the undisputed lightweight champion, Devin Haney. “I am ready for Devin Haney,” Zepeda declared, expressing gratitude towards Gesta and Golden Boy for the opportunity. While Haney, with an undefeated record of 30-0, is slated to face WBC light welterweight champion Regis Prograis on December 9th, Zepeda’s challenge might be hard for him to ignore. However, Haney’s return to the 135 division seems contingent on a potential high-stakes bout against Gervonta Davis.

Zepeda’s recent performance has undoubtedly elevated his status, but securing a title shot might still be a challenge. Despite his prowess, Zepeda’s current standing as a non-PPV attraction in the U.S. combined with his intimidating power and work rate might deter potential opponents. Regardless, Zepeda remains undeterred, stating, “I knew he was a dangerous fighter, and I knew I had to keep on working.” Only time will reveal if a showdown with Haney is on the horizon.
