Oscar De La Hoya has expressed keen interest in staging a welterweight showdown between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Errol Spence at Dallas Stadium.
Speaking with Fight Hype, the Golden Boy Promotions founder said such a fight would “sell out the place,” citing the Texan roots of both fighters. It’s an ambitious plan that would give Ortiz a major test and offer Spence a chance to reestablish himself after a prolonged absence from the ring.
Spence has been inactive since his punishing defeat to Terence Crawford two years ago, a loss some observers say may have “ruined” him. The former unified welterweight champion has yet to prove otherwise, leaving questions about his physical and mental readiness. Meanwhile, Ortiz has continued his rapid ascent, building momentum with a streak of crowd-pleasing stoppages. A fight between the two could be explosive, but Spence’s ring rust and potential lingering damage might lead to a one-sided affair.

From a business standpoint, an all-Texas clash with huge local support would likely draw a massive gate. De La Hoya pointed to the fighters’ popularity in the region as a prime selling point, but some fans wonder if there’s still significant demand for Spence, who hasn’t won a fight since before the Crawford disaster. Ortiz remains near his peak, hungry for top-tier opposition, and a matchup with Spence could be a blockbuster - assuming “The Truth” still has enough left to be competitive.
