Golden Boy Promotions’ recent court victory over Vergil Ortiz Jr. has the power to stall the unbeaten contender’s career, potentially shelving him until September or beyond. The ruling also threatens to derail a long-discussed clash with Jaron “Boots” Ennis.

Ortiz remained defiant after the decision sent the dispute to arbitration. Writing on social media, the WBC interim junior middleweight champion insisted he plans to continue the legal fight. “Although the judge didn’t see it our way and the fight is blocked for now, my team and I will be moving on to arbitration and to the court appeal. My time with [Golden Boy] is done,” Ortiz stated.

Despite the setback, those close to the situation believe the dispute is unlikely to drag on for months. Boxing attorney Kurt Emhoff, who is not involved in the case, said the financial incentive surrounding a major fight like Ortiz vs. Ennis makes a settlement likely. “Generally, these cases all settle out when there’s incentive for both sides to get it done,” he said.

The disagreement escalated after Golden Boy reportedly pushed for a 60–40 purse split in Ortiz’s favor for a potential bout with Ennis, with the winner receiving an additional 5 percent. That proposal cooled negotiations with Ennis’ promoter Eddie Hearn.

Ortiz’s camp has also argued that his contract allows manager Rick Mirigian to seek better opportunities elsewhere, with reports suggesting Matchroom was willing to pay Ortiz $12 million for a fight with Ennis. But while arbitration now looms, many in the industry still expect a deal to be reached.
