The IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia has a tough challenge on January 8 at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, taking on unbeaten New Zealander David Nyika. Opetaia hopes to shake off doubts lingering from his lackluster performance against Mairis Briedis in May, where critics say he got on his bike once the going got rough.

For Nyika, this is a golden chance to capitalize on what some see as Opetaia’s vulnerability under pressure. Briedis’ blueprint - constant forward momentum and big shots - seemed to rattle Opetaia, who’s been accused of disliking a firefight. If Nyika can pour on the offense and force the champ to trade, he could end up walking away with that belt.

Opetaia, though, insists he’s game to stand in the pocket and silence the naysayers. He acknowledges he’s sparred plenty with Nyika and knows it won’t be an easy night. Still, Aussie fans want to see a more assertive, confident Jai who’s not afraid to take a punch in order to give one back.
