Errol Spence Jr. has admitted he considered retirement after his stoppage loss to Terence Crawford, but says he now feels refreshed ahead of his return against Tim Tszyu.
Spence built his name as one of boxing’s leading welterweights, winning the IBF title against Kell Brook before adding the WBC and WBA belts with victories over Shawn Porter and Yordenis Ugas.
His long-awaited undisputed fight with Crawford in July 2023 ended in a one-sided stoppage defeat, and Spence has not fought since. The loss raised questions about whether “The Truth” would ever return.
“Definitely, there were thoughts of retirement,” Spence said. “But I feel rejuvenated. That long layoff has definitely helped me physically, it has definitely helped me mentally.”
Spence said he knows people will doubt what version of him comes back, but he sees that criticism as motivation. He pointed to previous moments in his career, including an eye injury and car crash, when nobody was sure whether he will return.
Now, Spence will try to answer those doubts again when he faces Tszyu in Australia on July 25.
