Tim Tszyu faced a harsh reality yesterday as he struggled to process his devastating loss to IBF junior middleweight champion Bakhram Murtazaliev. Fighting at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida, Tszyu was dropped four times before his uncle and trainer, Igor Goloubevk, threw in the towel in the third round, ending what could be the most damaging night of Tszyu's career.

Heading into the fight as the favorite, the 29-year-old Tszyu was hoping to bounce back from his March split-decision loss to Sebastian Fundora. With his father, boxing legend Kostya Tszyu, watching ringside for the first time since his son's pro debut in 2016, expectations were high. But instead of redemption, Tszyu was handed a one-sided defeat that left his confidence and career needing serious rebuilding.

Despite his courageous efforts, Tszyu couldn't overcome Murtazaliev’s power. The Russian champion’s left hook proved to be the difference, repeatedly hurting Tszyu throughout the bout. Even after each knockdown, Tszyu bravely fought on, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide. Reflecting on the fight, Tszyu admitted he couldn’t recall much of what happened, likely a sign of the concussive blows he absorbed.

"What the fuck just happened?" Tszyu asked in the aftermath, struggling to come to terms with the defeat. “I need to regroup... things didn’t go according to script. It was a little bit different."

Tszyu acknowledged that Murtazaliev was the better man on the night, offering no excuses and accepting that he would need to rebuild his career from here. "Things didn’t go to plan, and the better man won tonight. No excuses... Bakhram is the man at 154."
