A potential meeting between Jack Catterall and George Kambosos Jr. looms large if Kambosos can secure a victory this Saturday in Sydney. The 31-year-old Kambosos, making his debut at super lightweight and first appearance under the Matchroom banner, takes on fellow Australian Jake Wyllie at Qudos Bank Arena.
Originally slated to face Indonesia’s Daud Yordan, the former unified champion at 135 had his plans upended when Yordan was forced to withdraw due to medical issues.
Meanwhile, Jack Catterall is plotting his next step after a competitive defeat this February to Arnold Barboza Jr. Promoter Eddie Hearn says the plan is for Catterall to return in a significant matchup rather than a tune-up, targeting a possible September date. Catterall and his team have made it clear they want a marquee opponent immediately – no rebuilding phase – with options that include fellow Englishman Dalton Smith, IBF champion Richardson Hitchins, and now Kambosos Jr if he overcomes Wyllie.
For Kambosos, who once held three major belts at lightweight, a statement win at 140 lbs would place him right in contention with a host of notable names, including Catterall. Hearn acknowledges that the super lightweight division is stacked with possibilities, and both Catterall and Kambosos are in line to face big names for their next bouts. Even if Kambosos might have preferred a direct shot at another world title, a potential fight with Catterall could offer the Australian another path to redemption.
