Jose Armando Resendiz could soon make the first defense of his newly upgraded WBA super middleweight title against a familiar name. Rumours say that talks are well underway for Resendiz to face former world champion Jaime Munguia, with optimism from multiple sources that the matchup can be finalized for an early spring Premier Boxing Champions show on Prime Video.

The discussions offer a clear next step for Munguia, who recently declined to pursue a vacant IBF title fight against Osleys Iglesias. With that option off the table, attention has turned to Resendiz, now the full WBA titleholder after being formally elevated in the sanctioning body’s latest ratings cycle. While no firm date has been set, both sides are exploring the logistics to bring the fight together.

Resendiz has not fought since his career-altering upset win over Caleb Plant last May in Las Vegas, earning the WBA interim belt. That result gained even greater significance after Terence Crawford’s defeat of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and subsequent retirement, which left the super middleweight division’s title picture wide open and paved the way for Resendiz’s promotion to full champion.

For Munguia, the potential title shot follows a complicated 2025. He fought just once, avenging a prior knockout loss to Bruno Surace with a unanimous decision win in May. However, a post-fight drug test produced an adverse finding for exogenous testosterone, ultimately resulting in no major disciplinary action but limiting his activity for the remainder of the year.
