Roy Jones Jr. has made his feelings clear on Terence Crawford’s surprise decision to retire, offering a concise but emphatic verdict on the timing of the move. Speaking after Crawford announced the end of his career earlier this week, Jones summed it up in four words: “Beautiful thing; perfect timing.”

Crawford exits the sport with a legacy few can match. After winning his first world title at lightweight in 2014, the 38-year-old continued climbing divisions before achieving what many consider his most remarkable feat - becoming undisputed champion at super middleweight. That accomplishment came after he jumped two weight classes to face Canelo Alvarez in September, overcoming significant physical disadvantages to secure a clear unanimous decision.

Another defining chapter of Crawford’s career was his dominant performance against Errol Spence Jr in 2023. Written off by many ahead of the fight, Crawford instead delivered a destructive nine-round display, dismantling Spence and reinforcing his status as one of the most complete fighters of his generation.

With his achievements secured Crawford’s retirement has been widely viewed as well-timed, even amid reports that a rematch with Canelo had been discussed for next year. Jones, himself a pound-for-pound great, clearly shares that view.
