Jaron "Boots" Ennis may have a career-defining decision to make soon, as talks about a clash with Vergil Ortiz Jr. continue to linger without resolution. According to Eddie Hearn, Ennis's promoter, the fight could happen on February 22, but significant doubts remain.

Ennis's recent struggles in the ring have raised questions about whether he is ready for such a high-stakes bout. His performance against Karen Chukhadzhian on November 9 left many underwhelmed, and his showing against David Avanesyan earlier this year also failed to inspire confidence.

The proposed bout with Ortiz would require Ennis to move up to 154 lbs, where Ortiz has been campaigning for three fights. Hearn acknowledged that the weight class adds another layer of complexity, as Boots is more comfortable at welterweight, where he holds the IBF title.

"Boots would rather fight at 147, but Vergil won’t fight there. He's been at 154 for too long," said Hearn.

The Matchroom promoter also hinted that Ennis may not be mentally ready for such a challenge, noting his lackluster performances and apparent loss of self-belief.
