Boxing icon Roy Jones Jr. shared devastating news: his son, DeAndre, tragically took his own life last Saturday.
In his heartfelt message, the 55-year-old Jones wrote,
"Unfortunately, my son DeAndre took his life on Saturday. I’m so thankful that God allowed me to come home Friday night to spend the last night of his life with me and the family. I know a lot of people are going through tough times right now, but nothing is worth taking your own life. God gives it and God should be the one to take it away.
Please respect our privacy while my family and I process this loss.
Thank you for the love and support.
- Roy Jones Jr."
DeAndre was one of Jones' three children with his wife. Jones, a legend in the boxing world, boasts a career record of 66-10, with 47 knockouts, and his career highlights include being a former middleweight champion, winning the WBA heavyweight title in 2003, and reigning as the undisputed light heavyweight champion with WBA, WBC, and IBF titles. In 2020, Jones stepped back into the ring for an exhibition match against Mike Tyson, which ended in a split draw after eight rounds.
Jones' legacy in the sport is profound, and this recent tragedy has elicited a wave of support from fans and the boxing community.
