Irish boxer Glenn Byrne has announced the end of his career at just 29 years old after suffering a brain bleed in his recent defeat to William Crolla earlier this month.

Byrne, who held a 7-1-1 record, was stretchered out of the ring following a dramatic knockout on April 3 in Cheshire, England. The bout had been a back-and-forth contest, with Crolla dropped four times before landing a decisive overhand left that abruptly ended the fight - and ultimately Byrne’s career.

In a statement shared on social media, Byrne confirmed that he is no longer medically cleared to compete after doctors identified a bleed on his brain. While describing himself as “devastated,” he acknowledged that the outcome could have been far worse and expressed gratitude for still being in good health.

Turning professional less than two years ago, Byrne reflected positively on his time in the sport, highlighting appearances at major venues including Dublin’s 3Arena, Belfast’s SSE Arena, and the National Stadium in Dublin. He credited his team and family, particularly his brother and manager, for supporting his journey.

Support quickly followed from across the boxing community, including Crolla, who praised Byrne and wished him well for the future.
