Teofimo Lopez’s hopes of defending his WBO 140-pound title against former champ Subriel Matias on March 15 have collapsed after Tuesday’s deadline passed without an agreement. Despite promoter Bob Arum’s final offer, both sides remain at odds. Lopez took to social media to insist he hasn’t rejected the Matias fight - claiming it’s his counteroffer that was turned down - while Top Rank officials are left scratching their heads.
Arum, who had hoped to fill a March slot at T-Mobile Arena, is moving on to other bouts and seems unconcerned about Lopez’s next step. The fighter's recent behavior, including a desire to leave Top Rank despite a reportedly binding contract, has prompted at least one official to label his actions "delusional." They point out that Lopez has turned down bigger paydays and a possible Devin Haney matchup, opting instead for easier fights like Jamaine Ortiz and Steve Claggett.

Lopez has also hinted at ongoing personal and financial issues - ranging from a divorce to a dispute with longtime manager David McWater. For now, Matias is free to find a different opponent, and Lopez's future is in limbo. The 27-year-old fan favorite promises he’ll return to the ring in 2025, but who he’ll fight or under which promotional banner remains anyone’s guess.
